Hidden in Laguna - Excerpt 2
Braden couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The thought of Tania sleeping in her car was horrific. She could have been attacked. Anything could have happened. It was too much.
“Surely as a professional dancer you earned enough and had some money saved?”
Tania scoffed. “You’d think. My parents took a hefty share as payback for their investment, then I had to pay my bills out here. However, now that I’m working for Blaine I’ll soon be able to afford something nicer.”
Braden couldn’t resist. “Even more reason for you to move in to my place above the bar. We can sign a lease, or anything you want. I’d like you to have the apartment, and I won’t take no for an answer.” He smiled, half-joking at the last comment, but her hackles were up.
“That’s not your call, is it? I can live where I choose, and I don’t choose to live in your property.”
Braden wanted to argue, but he could tell by the set of her chin that he would be chasing his tail.
“It isn’t my intention to upset you. Look, I’ve got to go, I’ve got a meeting with Zach and Paul. They aren’t too happy with me either.”
She saw him to the door which wasn’t arduous, since the room was so tiny. He’d had to share a room with his brothers when they were younger, but he had never had a place of his own that was this small. How did she work and live here? Although it was so neat and tidy you could probably eat off the carpet. Check that, the carpet had more stains than pattern. And that was with a couple of bright rugs that potentially hid more of them.
They stood awkwardly for a few moments. Tania chewed a nail, and all he could think about was taking her home with him.
Finally, she broke the silence, her hand on the doorknob. “Thanks for the offer, Braden. I do appreciate it.”
“Sure,” he kissed her cheek, but his heart was heavy with disappointment and worry. He went home thinking how he should have been able to talk her into it. Maybe he should discuss how he could with Blaine.
No. Tania wouldn’t be impressed if he did that. He had to work this out for himself, and maybe he needed time to do that. Of course it didn’t stop him from thinking about her.
He lay in his huge bed, alone and frustrated in every single way it was possible to be.
